How to obtain a home care package


Assess whether you need home care

If you or a loved one realise that you need a helping hand, maybe it is time to look into home care. A wonderful way to receive support from an expert carer when you need it, there is a variety of packages out there that can be adjusted to suit your needs. This can undeniably be a tough step to take, but with Home Caring’s support, you will get the help you need without having to compromise on living your life to the fullest.

Register with My Aged Care

If you have decided that home care is right for you or your relative, it is important to register with My Aged Care. You can do this by either visiting their website or by calling1800 200 422. A quick and easy process, it is an important step in the process of getting approved for home care.

ACAT assessment

Also known as an aged care assessment, an ACAT is an assessment carried out by a team that might include a nurse, occupational therapist and physiotherapist. The assessment needs to be done to approve the level of care and to make sure that part of your package can be government funded. During the assessment, you will be visited by the team at your property. If they declare that you are eligible for a Home Care Package, you will be informed within 10 days by means of a letter. This will state the level that they think is appropriate for you and you will be placed in a national queue that is determined by the priority of care that you need. Keep in mind, however, that it can take up to a year for a package to become available to you. Alongside your health, they will also take into consideration your personal preference and your living situation.

Research providers in your area

While you are waiting to be allocated to a Home Care Package, you can get in contact with providers that are in your area. With Home Caring, you can contact us via phone or email. You can also book a free consultation by filling out the easy-to-use form on the homepage. Home Caring will inform you of how much each of the packages cost and what they will entail.

Decide on a provider

When you have decided on the right provider, you have 56 days to confirm which Home Care Package agreement you want to go with. Once confirmed with both My Aged Care and Home Caring, your package will begin within 2 weeks. As soon as this has begun, it is a good idea to talk with Home Caring about the best way that you can meet your goals and needs. By budgeting out what you need to spend every day and if you want to plan for a future event, you can make the most out of the funding.


  • What is a Home Care Package?
  • A Home Care Package allows seniors living in Australia to access affordable care services in their own home. There are 4 Home Care Package levels that you can be eligible to receive, ranging from basic care needs (level 1) through to high care needs (level 4). Once you are approved for a package, you can choose a service provider that best supports your needs and goals. The government then pays that provider a subsidy to deliver services in your home.

  • Who is eligible for a home care package?
  • Depending on the level you are eligible for, home care package funds can be spent on things that relate to your care and wellbeing. Common services and items people use their funding on are: personal care (e.g. showering, dressing, continence management), domestic chores, shopping assistance, therapies(e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy), meal preparation, transportation to appointments, respite care, garden maintenance, medication management, social activities, nursing (e.g. wound management),podiatry, home modifications, assistive technology (e.g. walking frames) and exercise programs.

  • How much are home care packages?
  • If you are eligible for a Home Care Package, the government will cover most of the cost of your care. Depending on your income, you will be expected to contribute a certain amount to your provider for your services. This consists of three types of fees: a basic daily fee, an income-tested care fee (full pensioners do not have to pay this), and any additional fees for services that aren’t covered by your package. Each service provider charges a different amount for their services and care.

  • What is the difference between CHSP and home care packages?
  • The CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Program) is an entry-level program for seniors who are mostly able to live on their own. It provides government-subsidised, low-intensity help to those who only need a small amount of assistance.
    On the other hand, a Home Care Packages a coordinated and tailored service that helps older people with complex care needs continue living at home. You can decide how to spend your funds rather than choosing from a menu of services (as is the case with the CHSP). In general, government subsidised CHSP services should not be provided to people who are receiving a Home Care Package. When you are assigned a package and choose a provider, your CHSP services will cease and services will be paid from your Home Care Package funding instead.

  • What isn’t included in a home care package?
  • A Home Care Package does not fund the following services: food, payment for permanent accommodation (e.g. rent or mortgage repayments), discretionary spending, day-to-day bills, holidays, entertainment activities and items already covered by Medicare or Pharmaceutical Benefits.

  • Who can deliver home care package services?
  • Only government-approved Home Care Package providers can host Home Care Packages for clients. This means they have satisfied the government’s legal and social requirements to administer packages to Australian consumers.

  • Each level of Home Care Packages provides different funding amounts, depending on the amount of care you need.
    Level 1 provides for basic care needs at approximately $8750 a year
    Level 2 providers for low care needs at approximately $15,500 a year
    Level 3 provides for Intermediate care needs at approximately $34,000 a year
    Level 4 provides for high care needs at approximately $51,500 a year
